English Language Learners (ELL)

About the English Language Learners Program

The purpose of the Saanich School District’s English Language Learner supports is to assist students in developing the language skills and knowledge necessary for personal success.  ELL supports are designed to strengthen the intellectual, social and career development of students by helping them to:

  • improve their ability to communicate fluently in English at school and in the community;
  • acquire the English needed to make academic progress within the B.C. school system;
  • develop other academic skills such as numeracy, scientific understanding, and group participation; and
  • develop an understanding of the similarities and differences between their home culture and the Canadian culture.

English Language Learner supports are provided by specialty teachers who have been trained to teach English language learners.  Support may be provided in-class, in small groups, or in a combination of these methods.  ELL teachers provide regular instructional service, administer ELL assessments and create an Annual Instructional Plan (AIP) for each qualifying student.

More information about this support can be obtained from your child’s school.
