Generative AI in Saanich Schools

Framework for Artificial Intelligence in Saanich Schools

Overview

The Board’s Strategic Plan and the First Peoples Principles of Learning provide the framework for the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Saanich Schools.

When used appropriately, AI tools have the potential to enhance the teaching and learning process. In addition to direct classroom uses, streamlining administrative and organizational tasks can optimize efficiency, enabling everyone to continue to prioritize human interactions.

Education is inherently relational, with human connections playing a vital role in the learning process. While AI tools can offer valuable support, maintaining continued human interaction is essential for fostering meaningful relationships. AI tools are used as a complement to human processes, not a replacement for them.

Teaching and Learning

We believe in providing meaningful and relevant teaching and learning experiences.

We do this by:

  • Communicating clear information and guiding the effective use of AI for staff, students, and parents/guardians;

  • Testing AI tools before they are used to ensure reliability, safety and effectiveness for classroom use;

  • Understanding how AI tools work, including the potential limitations and biases;

  • Using AI tools as supplements to enrich critical and creative thinking, that amplifies but does not replace traditional instruction and teacher expertise;  and

  • Supporting personalized learning and the development of digital literacy skills which promote the safe, ethical and responsible use of AI.

Inclusive & Accessible Learning

We prioritize well-being, embrace diversity, and promote fairness and equity.

We do this by:

  • Adopting a human-centred approach that prioritizes meaningful learning experiences and recognizes the importance of human interaction, well-being and safety;

  • Applying AI tools that expose users to diverse ideas and perspectives and avoid reinforcement biases; and

  • Supporting AI tools that are inclusive, accessible and equitable.

Ethical Use

We choose our tools carefully and use them safely and equitably.

We do this by:

  • Inspiring learners to become knowledgeable, curious and active global citizens while supporting the well-being of themselves and others;

  • Informing the community about how AI tools are being used and providing opportunities for input on the tools and decisions;

  • Selecting AI tools that align with the District’s priorities and procedures for technology use;

  • Monitoring AI tools for emerging risks and learning opportunities; and

  • Ensuring that AI-related experiences reflect our Code of Conduct which supports a caring and safe school environment as a foundation for successful learning.

Privacy, Security and Safety

We protect privacy and are careful with our data.

We do this by:

  • Ensuring that staff and students have a broad understanding of district privacy and security procedures;

  • Selecting AI tools that adhere to robust data security protocols and privacy regulations that protect sensitive staff and student information;

  • Using AI tools in ways that respect and uphold privacy and data rights; and

  • Providing clear procedures to mitigate potential risks and safeguard sensitive information.
