BOMB THREATS
Background
The District has a responsibility to ensure the safety of students, staff and visitors in all District facilities. All bomb threats are to be taken seriously and appropriate action taken.
Procedures
- Upon receipt of a bomb threat, the Principal shall follow the procedures set in the Saanich District’s “School Emergency and Critical Response Information” manual.
- The Principal will assume responsibility for dismissal or evacuation of the school. It is recommended that the school not be evacuated in case of a bomb threat unless, in the evaluation of the Principal, the circumstances require.
- For an imminent threat, call 911 and then call the Superintendent and/or the Safe School Coordinator.
- In all other circumstances, contact the Superintendent and/or the Safe School Coordinator followed by the school liaison officer or the Non-Emergency Police contact.
- The Safe School Coordinator will activate the Community Threat Assessment Protocol.
- After the threat is mitigated, the Principal and Safe School Coordinator will debrief with staff, police and/or other agencies involved with the bomb threat.
- The Principal and Safe School Coordinator will consider whether there is a need for support from the District Critical Incident Response Team.
