On Tuesday September 29th we pause as a school district to observe the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. We honour the children who never returned home from residential schools, the survivors who carry the impacts of those experiences, and the families, communities, and Nations whose resilience continues to shape this country.

This day calls us to remember, but it also calls us to reflect on the future we are helping to create.

As educators, support staff, and leaders, we have the privilege and responsibility of working with young people at a time when understanding, empathy, and respect for one another have never been more important. Reconciliation is not solely about understanding the past. It is about shaping a future where every child sees themselves reflected in their learning, where Indigenous identities, cultures, languages, and ways of knowing are valued, and where all students develop the knowledge and character needed to contribute to a more equitable and inclusive society.

Over the past several years, Saanich Schools has taken important steps alongside Indigenous partners, students, families, and communities to strengthen Indigenous education and improve outcomes for Indigenous learners. We have deepened our learning, expanded opportunities for student voice, and worked to embed Indigenous perspectives throughout our schools. While we can be proud of this progress, we also recognize that reconciliation is ongoing work. It asks us to remain curious, humble, and committed to continual growth.

As we mark this day, I encourage each of us to take time to listen, learn, and reflect. Let us honour the truth of our shared history not only with remembrance, but through the choices we make every day in our classrooms, schools, and community. The relationships we build, the belonging we foster, and the opportunities we create for young people are among the most meaningful contributions we can make toward reconciliation.
