Summer Student Labourers - Roads and Drains @ District of Central Saanich

Reporting to Roads & Drains supervisor, the Student Labourer performs a variety of operational and maintenance tasks to support the District’s Roads & Drains systems.  The Roads & Drains system includes infrastructure such as roads, sidewalks, roadside vegetation, catch basins, culverts and drainage ditches.

The ideal candidate will be or have:

•    Currently enrolled in secondary or post-secondary program;
•    Experience working with tools;
•    Experience working as a member of a team; 
•    A Driver’s license is required as you must move between the District’s various work locations, a Driver’s Abstract will be required. (novice “N” license would be acceptable); and,
•    Supply own safety footwear to WorkSafeBC requirements.

The hourly pay rate for this full time (8 hours per day), Monday to Friday position is $27.40 (Living Wage (2025 rates)). Student Labourer, Roads & Drains
Engineering Department
(pay rate: living wage- $27.40 (2025 rate))

General Accountability/Purpose

Reporting to Roads & Drains supervisor, the Student Labourer performs a variety of operational and maintenance tasks to support the District’s Roads & Drains systems.  The Roads & Drains system includes infrastructure such as roads, sidewalks, roadside vegetation, catch basins, culverts and drainage ditches.

Nature and Scope of Work

•    Performs painting tasks in the field or in a paint shop;
•    Uses equipment and power tools to perform vegetation control and brushing;
•    Assists in drainage inspections and clean out; 
•    Performs vehicle equipment checks and restocking of small parts and materials; 
•    Aids in inventory count;
•    Aids in conducting a signage inventory;
•    Applies topsoil and seed to boulevards; 
•    Rakes, shovels and hand moves aggregates for road or interconnected path works;
•    Performs general site clean-up;
•    Follows all corporate policies and processes;
•    Participates in emergency duties in the event of an emergency or disaster; and,
•    Performs other related duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities 

•    Excellent customer service skills with the ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships. 
•    Knowledge and ability to comply with and follow all pertinent WorkSafeBC and Occupational Health and Safety regulations.
•    Knowledge of and comfort with the safe use of equipment and hand tools such as mowers, and whipper snippers.
•    Willingness to learn and grow skills through hands on learning experiences.
•    Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
•    Ability to effectively respond to inquiries from the public in a prompt, tactful and diplomatic way. 
•    Ability to work independently, take initiative and multi-task to achieve work deliverables. 
•    Physically able to perform the required work and work outside in all weather conditions. 
•    Ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure.
•    Ability to work positively toward advancing First Nations relations and awareness of federal, provincial and municipal initiatives advancing Truth and Reconciliation.
•    Ability to promote and contribute to a positive, diverse and inclusive team environment.

Requirements

Education and Experience: 
•    Currently enrolled in secondary or post-secondary program;
•    Experience working with tools;
•    Experience working as a member of a team; and,
•    A Driver’s license is required as you must move between the District’s various work locations, a Driver’s Abstract will be required. (novice “N” license would be acceptable).

Other: 
•    Hours of work will typically be 8:00 am to 4:30 pm.
•    This position is not eligible to participate in the Flexible Workplace Policy.
•    Supply own safety footwear to WorkSafeBC requirements.
