Summer Student Labourers @ District of Central Saanich

JOB OVERVIEW

Reporting to the Parks Supervisor, the Student Labourer performs a variety of operational and maintenance tasks to support the District’s parks and green spaces. The Parks system includes playgrounds, trails, sports fields, gardens, and public green spaces.

The ideal candidate will be or have:

•    Currently enrolled in secondary or post-secondary program;
•    Experience working with tools;
•    Experience working as a member of a team; 
•    A Driver’s license is required as you must move between the District’s various work locations, a Driver’s Abstract will be required. (novice “N” license would be acceptable); and,
•    Supply own safety footwear to WorkSafeBC requirements.

The hourly pay rate for this full time (8 hours per day), Monday to Friday position is $27.40 (Living Wage (2025 rates)). Student Labourer, Parks
Engineering Department
(pay rate: living wage- $27.40 (2025 rate))

General Accountability/Purpose

Reporting to the Parks Supervisor, the Student Labourer performs a variety of operational and maintenance tasks to support the District’s parks and green spaces. The Parks system includes playgrounds, trails, sports fields, gardens, and public green spaces.

Nature and Scope of Work

•    Performs general landscaping duties, including mowing, weeding, and pruning.
•    Assists with the maintenance of sports fields, playgrounds, and trails.
•    Uses equipment and power tools such as lawnmowers, hedge trimmers, and line trimmer.
•    Performs garbage and recycling collection in park areas.
•    Assists in planting and maintaining flower beds and trees.
•    Assists in park infrastructure basic repairs.
•    Performs general site clean-up and debris removal.
•    Follows all corporate policies and safety procedures.
•    Participates in emergency duties in the event of an emergency or disaster.
•    Performs other related duties as required.

•    Excellent customer service skills with the ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships.
•    Knowledge and ability to comply with WorkSafeBC and Occupational Health and Safety regulations.
•    Knowledge of and comfort with the safe use of equipment and hand tools.
•    Willingness to learn and grow skills through hands-on learning experiences.
•    Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
•    Ability to effectively respond to inquiries from the public in a prompt, tactful, and diplomatic way.
•    Ability to work independently, take initiative, and multi-task to achieve work deliverables.
•    Physically able to perform the required work and work outside in all weather conditions.
•    Ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure.
•    Ability to work positively toward advancing First Nations relations and awareness of federal, provincial, and municipal initiatives advancing Truth and Reconciliation.
•    Ability to promote and contribute to a positive, diverse, and inclusive team environment.

Requirements

Education and Experience: 
•    Currently enrolled in a secondary or post-secondary program.
•    Experience working with tools.
•    Experience working as a member of a team.
•    A Driver’s license is required as you must move between the District’s various work locations; a Driver’s Abstract will be required (novice “N” license is acceptable).

Other: 
•    Hours of work will typically be 7:06 am to 4:06 pm.
•    This position is not eligible to participate in the Flexible Workplace Policy.
•    Must supply own safety footwear that meets WorkSafeBC requirements.
