Administrative Procedure 165 - Appendix C

BOMB THREATS

Background

The District has a responsibility to ensure the safety of students, staff and visitors in all District facilities. All bomb threats are to be taken seriously and appropriate action taken.

Procedures

  1. Upon receipt of a bomb threat, the Principal shall follow the procedures set in the Saanich District’s “School Emergency and Critical Response Information” manual.
  2. The Principal will assume responsibility for dismissal or evacuation of the school. It is recommended that the school not be evacuated in case of a bomb threat unless, in the evaluation of the Principal, the circumstances require.
  3. For an imminent threat, call 911 and then call the Superintendent and/or the Safe School Coordinator.
  4. In all other circumstances, contact the Superintendent and/or the Safe School Coordinator followed by the school liaison officer or the Non-Emergency Police contact.
  5. The Safe School Coordinator will activate the Community Threat Assessment Protocol.
  6. After the threat is mitigated, the Principal and Safe School Coordinator will debrief with staff, police and/or other agencies involved with the bomb threat.
  7. The Principal and Safe School Coordinator will consider whether there is a need for support from the District Critical Incident Response Team.
